MAHECAS donates PPE to Health Care Workers in Malawi

The Malawi Healthcare Support (MAHECAS) UK has donated over K9 million worth of assorted supplies to the Society of Medical Doctors SMD, to help support Malawi’s response to the COVID19 global health pandemic.

The UK-based group made the donation to be used by SMD members and other frontline healthcare workers at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe.

Speaking during the symbolic donation in Lilongwe, MAHECAS’s Secretary Mr Mac Banda said that this is the second-time MAHECAS has collaborated with SMD in its effort to assist the government of Malawi to fight against COVID-19. “This donation will ensure that front line health workers have the necessary equipment to protect them” added Mr Banda.

In thanking MAHECAS for the donation, SMD President Dr. Victor Mgonjetsi Mithi said the equipment will be distributed to various district hospitals in Malawi.

The Society of Medical Doctors (SMD) is a professional group of medical doctors in Malawi. Its aim is to provide a vehicle through which doctors can support the government and other key stakeholders in providing quality health services in the country.

A majority of these funds were raised by well-wishers spearheaded by Khama Matiti, Augustine Mzumara, Linley Chiwona-Karltun, Dambu Tenber and others who had formed a group to raise funds to support COVID 19 projects in Malawi. The additional funds were raised through two other initiatives organised by Mrs Janet Kabambe and Miriam Mabaso.
