Flood Survivors Plead for Winter Cropping Support

Some households that are still in disaster evacuation camps following Tropical Storm Cyclone Freddy-induced floods in Chikwawa are asking authorities and well-wishers to support them with materials for winter cropping.

Village head Chakhumbira appealed on behalf of the people when Malawi Health Care Support (MAHECAS) donated food and non-food relief items at Chikuse and Mazongoza camps in Nchalo, Chikwawa.

According to the traditional leader, the people are ready to utilise the moisture in their fields to grow some food to reduce dependence on handouts.

“Water levels are getting down, if we can get support such as seeds, fertilizer and chemicals we will be good to go,” said the chief

In his remarks coordinator for MAHECAS Lawrence Gogodus said they included the component of farming materials in their donation knowing that the displaced people cannot only depend on food handouts.

“As things return to normalcy we want these people to be able to fend for themselves,” said Gogodus.

Currently, the district has three camps that are still operational as people await to relocate to a new area. Please see more photos from the donation below.
